Birth at Birth Centre Bremen

Birth is at the heart of our work.

We strengthen your confidence in giving birth autonomously. In a protected setting with a familiar midwife, you can follow your own path.

Our approach:

  • Calm and safety for a natural birth
  • Continuous care in a pleasant atmosphere
  • Competent, evidence-based practice for a safe start to life

A “natural” birth is the wish of most people, and the majority are able to give birth normally and without interventions.

Birth is a complex, self-regulating life process, that usually does not require treatment. In peace and safety, without external disturbances, hormones can work optimally and birth can unfold in its own rhythm.

If your pregnancy is normal, nothing stands in the way of a natural birth at our birth centre or at home. Of course, we always adhere to modern safety standards.

From antenatal care to birth

At the Bremen Birth Center, we work in two midwifery teams, consisting of three and four midwives respectively. This team-based approach means you have reliable, personal support, while also creating good working conditions for us.

Pregnancy – your first appointment with us

Your first appointment at the Birth Center will be a personal initial consultation with a midwife. Over time, you will get to know all the midwives on your team here: during the comprehensive medical history intake, prenatal check-ups, consultations, and childbirth preparation. This is how the foundation for a trusting relationship is built.

The antenatal examinations—apart from the three recommended ultrasound scans—can take place entirely at our birth center or alternately with your OB-GYN.

When a Birth Centre or Home Birth Is Not Possible

Whether we can plan a birth at the Birth Centre or at home with you, is clarified in a detailed medical history consultation. Unfortunately, we cannot offer birth care if any of the following apply:

  • Two caesarean sections without a subsequent vaginal birth
  • Pregnancy less than one year after a caesarean section
  • Twins
  • Use of antidepressants
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes

Birth with a Midwife from Your Team

The natural birth window begins at 37+0 weeks of pregnancy and ends at 42+0. During this time, your midwifery team is on call for you.

We guarantee one-to-one care during labor, meaning one midwife from your team is continuously by your side. We support natural birth through breathing techniques, massage, and upright positions according to your needs. Toward the end of labor, we usually call in a second midwife.

After your baby is born, you are given plenty of time to bond together peacefully. A warm birth room, dimmed lighting, and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact support bonding, which is very important to us.

The umbilical cord is allowed to stop pulsing naturally. After the placenta is born, the birth process is complete. We treat any birth injuries if necessary and support you for the first breastfeeding. We also perform your baby’s first medical examination (U1).

After Birth

Three to four hours after birth, you go home, and the postnatal period begins with our continued care.

Safety During Birth

Pregnancy and birth are normal life processes – this is the foundation of our midwifery philosophy. A healthy person with a normal pregnancy is very likely to have a normal birth.

Our Quality Management

Since opening in 2002, we have built a comprehensive quality management system. We work evidence-based and according to current guidelines and safety standards from health insurance providers and professional associations.

The Birth Centre Bremen has participated from the beginning in data collection and analysis by the Society for Quality in Out-of-Hospital Births. Studies from the last ten years show that out-of-hospital births are just as safe as hospital births. Learn more here: www.quag.de

For us, safety during birth means that:

  • we have already cared for you during pregnancy and are therefore familiar with your needs and individual circumstances
  • you are able to build trust in us, our birth center, and our way of working
  • we are continuously by your side during labor (one-to-one care), allowing us to closely observe the progress of the birth
  • we monitor the baby’s well-being by listening to the heartbeat
  • the birth is not disrupted and the individual rhythm and dynamics of labor can unfold naturally
  • we call in a second midwife to attend the birth
  • we have medications and emergency equipment readily available
  • several hospitals are located nearby with which we maintain close and good cooperation
  • the vast majority of transfers to hospital can take place calmly and without urgency

For us, safety after birth means that:

  • we continue to closely and continuously monitor you and baby during the first hours
  • you only go home once we are confident that everything is well
  • you can reach us at any time during the first days of the postpartum period

Experience shows that most births proceed without complications. We create a solid foundation by regularly continuing our professional training and by constantly exchanging ideas within the team, reflecting on and improving our work.
